Our Objective:

To provide you, the competitor, with an SCCA divisional RoadRally weekend that will offer three days of enjoyable sports-car rallying, roads, and scenery in the Illinois portion of the St. Louis metropolitan region with the added challenge of autocross and drag racing. We will run our rallies in accordance with the applicable divisional requirements in the SCCA’s RoadRally Rules, 2018 Edition (available online in the rally section at scca.org), as amended by our General Instructions for the weekend.

Rally masters Jim Lynch with much assistance from Ron Ferris and Jim Heine has designed each rally with the beginning/occasional rally team in mind. Friday evening will be a new addition of Jim Heine’s Tulips at Night. Saturday’s rally will be the first rally designed by Jim Lynch and will incorporate parts of Jim and Ron’s Tulips and other Flowers first run twenty years ago, with a couple of new twists. Sunday’s Hunt for USRRC Red October will be a fun Rally using some of the same roads as the upcoming USRRC in October. Throw in a Saturday evening drag race and a Sunday morning autocross all of which award points towards the Targa Championship.

Tulips Under the Sturgeon Moon is a Monte-Carlo-style event with passage controls (offering we believe, a good introduction to rallying for rookie/novice teams), while The Land between the Waters will advance the introductory process one step by employing traditional open controls plus (perhaps) an occasional DIYC. Mostly, average speeds for the weekend will be moderate.

Please join us!

Our Objective:

To provide you, the competitor, with an exceptional USRRC weekend that will, regardless of your skill or experience level, polish your rally skills and show you some of the most enjoyable sports-car roads in southern Illinois. Along the way, we’ll introduce you to a bit of history, showcase some out-of-the-way communities, host a reception or two, and allow plenty of time for socializing and just plain fun—all in the hope that you will have as much fun participating in this weekend as we’ve had organizing it for you.

We will conduct the 2018 USRRC in accordance with the SCCA Road Rally Rules (RRRs), 2018 Edition (available online in the rally section at scca.org, as well as from Amazon.com), as amended by our General Instructions for the weekend.

If you will enjoy Monday, Oct. 8, as a holiday (Columbus Day), we urge you spend an extra day in St. Louis and enjoy some of the great things our region has to offer. Actually, visit a day early, too. There’s a lot to do and see here (e.g., visit explorestlouis.com, illinoissouth.org, and columbiaillinois.com/408/Tourism). You won’t regret it.

Rookie. Together, driver and navigator have participated in no more than four SCCA divisional or national rallies. Equipment may be no greater than that allowed by Limited-class rules.
Historic. Vehicles in production as of Jan. 1, 1976. Class rules based on RRRs Appendix B.

A special opportunity:

For Historic and Rookie teams desiring to participate only in the Saturday and Sunday portions of the weekend, we offer this opportunity: Run Le Petit Rally du Rocher on Saturday and Monopoly Redux on Sunday for just $100. Then join us Saturday evening for our banquet and Sunday noon for our concluding awards luncheon. We offer this opportunity as an introduction to classic SCCA road-rallying and as a way for you to have some fun with your wheels—while at the same time discovering the great countryside of southern Illinois. Combined, for these teams, the two events will count toward a Gateway Historic Cup for Historic teams and a Gateway Regional Cup for Rookie teams. You’re invited! We’d love to see you on the road.

ABOUT THE SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA

The Sports Car Club of America®, Inc., founded in 1944, is a 67,500-member motorsports organization that incorporates all facets of autocross, rally and road racing at both club and professional levels. With headquarters in Topeka, Kan., the SCCA annually sanctions more than 2,000 events through its 116 Regions and subsidiary divisions. Much of the SCCA’s activities are made possible with support from the following Official Partners: Chevrolet, the Official Truck of the SCCA; Hawk Performance, the Official Brake Products of SCCA; Mobil 1, the Official Oil of SCCA; Sunoco, the Official Fuel of SCCA; and Tire Rack, the Official Tire Retailer of SCCA. To learn more, visit scca.com.

ABOUT THE ST. LOUIS REGION, SCCA

The St. Louis Region, with nearly 800 members, offers Club Racing, Performance Driving Experience (PDX), RallyCross, RoadRally, Solo (autocross), and Street Survival School programs to educate and provide safe environments for individuals to enjoy their street-legal (daily driver) vehicles and purpose-built racecars. The region is home to more than 80 national champions and has been recognized three times by the Sports Car Club of America as the Region of the Year in its member category. In 2018, the region will become the first SCCA region to host the United States Road Rally Challenge (USRRC) four times, having hosted the premier event previously in 1998, 2001, and 2005. ABOUT COLUMBIA, ILL.

Columbia, Ill., (columbiaillinois.com) is both an historic southern Illinois town with roots that date to the 17th century and a modern, prosperous suburban community. Its historic Main Street, with its German vernacular buildings, remains the heart of the community as well as a shopping, tourist, and restaurant destination. The city is home also to a vibrant business community and diverse recreational activities. Its 63-mile “Not So Secret Training Loop,” for example, has been named the best bike ride in Illinois by Bicycle magazine.

ABOUT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Comprising the southern third of the state and beginning roughly south of Interstate 70, southern Illinois offers features distinct from other parts of the Land of Lincoln. The farther south one travels, the more “southern” the region becomes, a heritage of its early 19th-century immigrants from Kentucky and other parts of the upper antebellum south. In terms of population and economy, southern Illinois claims the largest metropolitan region—“the Metro East”—outside of Chicago, an energetic business climate, two of the state’s leading universities—Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, and Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville—and a major military installation, Scott Air Force Base, as well as Scott’s civilian aviation neighbor, MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. In terms of topography, the region offers a more varied landscape than the tabletop evenness of central Illinois or the glaciated ruggedness of its northwestern portion. As in much of Illinois, agriculture remains an economic cornerstone, but it is a more diverse industry in southern Illinois than the corn/soybeans monoculture prevalent in central and northern Illinois. As a home for SCCA rallying, the St. Louis and Southern Illinois Regions of the SCCA have explored the country lanes, roads, and highways of southern Illinois with great success since the founding of the two regions in the years after World War II. We will do so again in 2018, with great pleasure.
